4Cr13 Stainless steel strip (New name: 40Cr13) is a martensitic type stainless steel, which has higher hardness than 3Cr13 steel after quenching.
The steel has good mechanical processing performance. After heat treatment (quenching and tempering), it has good corrosion resistance, polishing performance, high strength and wear resistance.
4Cr13 нержавіюча сталь strip is commonly used in cutlery production. It contains a relatively small amount of carbon and chromium (around 0.40% – 1.00%). The material has good hardenability, wear, strength, and corrosion resistance.

The 4Cr13 equivalent is X39Cr13 in both European and ISO standards, corresponding to the steel number 1.4031. In China, the standards for this material are GB/T 1220 and GB/T 3280.
4Cr13 is a low-cost stainless steel that is easy to sharpen and rust-resistant but may not retain its edge, as well as D2 steel. D2 steel is a high-end tool steel that is more durable and retains its edge better but is less rust-resistant and may require more maintenance
SUS420J2 is a Japanese designation for a high-carbon stainless steel, while 4Cr13, 3Cr13, and 5Cr13 are Chinese designations for similar steels with varying carbon content. All are martensitic stainless steels known for high hardness, wear resistance, and moderate corrosion resistance, making them suitable for applications like knives, tools, medical instruments, and plastic molds.
